Oh you mean there's something other than hockey coming up?

Friday, May 22, 2009

Well, if hockey won't be interesting, then maybe tennis or football will. Then again, maybe not.

This Sunday will see the start of Roland Garros aka the French Open. What is this and why do we care? Well, let's see, it's the second of four Grand Slam tennis tournaments (Grand Slam = Uber important tournament). It's played in... France (hence the name). And it's played on clay. Yeah, that's the part part. Why? Because the Clay Monster (aka Nadal aka the Ovie of Tennis) has just OWNED this tournament. At 22, he's already bidding for his 5th straight title here which would give him the record for the most consecutive wins in Paris. So basically we can just kiss everyone else goodbye and just hand Nadal the silver salad bowl of doom.... the Ovie of Tennis will dominate and will either be challenged by the More-Adorable-Version-of-Crosby or the Djoker. I'll go on the record with my lame predictions and say we'll see Nadal and Djokovic in the final. Whoo......

And on Wednesday I will see if the More-Arrogant-Version-of-Crosby will win the battle of two football teams I don't like. Yay. FailCrosby better lose because I can NOT stand him. Whooo!

AAAAAAAAAAAND! My city sucks right now. Or at least a certain store near me that allegedly carries sports shirts/jerseys. I went in and first off, all their cool Habs stuff still costs a flipping fortune. Which made me mad because I wanted to buy Habs stuff. So I went to the back of the store where they stuff other teams' stuff. I figured I'd at least look to see if they had any Peach Fuzz shirts that I could at least oggle over.... Well, thanks to all the flipping Peachhawks bandwagoners they only had THESE instead.

Is there no stopping the Crysob from taking over the world? SOMEONE STOP HIM! We'll create a resistance movement. Like John Connors in the last Terminator movie that apparently made no sense. The normal people versus the robot Crysob!

Oh and Keenan was fired as headcoach of the Flames.

I guess there isn't something other than hockey after all....

Today in hockey that EP will be missing

...because she's headed off to the land of the defunct Nordiques for the day......

Women' s World Championship - Canada vs. Finland. If Canada doesn't win, I'll cry buckets. It's Finland for crying out loud. They're not ready to start challenging Canada.

QMJHL playoffs thing - my poor Juniors vs Drummondville. Poor Juniors will risk being swept at home if they lose tonight.

AHL - Moosies vs Hammies. I soooo want to hear the Flanders dude... *wails and kills radios* I WANT FLANDERS! =(

NHL - uh right, like I was really going to watch Toronto vs. Buffalo. Yeah right. Pfft.\

Oh and... Champions League thinger for football - Chelsea vs. Liverpool. Probably a good thing I'll be missing this one as I couldn't stand to see either side lose.

*wails*

Draws are in for the knockout stages of the Champions League and I'm going to cry. Why? Take a look!

Liverpool v Real Madrid
Juventus v Chelsea
Panathanaikos v Villareal
Bayern Munich v Sporting Lisbon
Porto v Atletico
Barcelona v Lyon
Roma v Arsenal
Man U v Inter Milan

THAT'S SO MEAN! This means that after the knockout stages I'll potentially only have one team to cheer for. Well, it better be two because Chelsea better get their act together to beat Juventus. But whyyyyyy or whyyyyy does Liverpool have to play Real Madrid??? WHY?!!!!! That's so cruel. I'm so unhappy now... *sniffles* I wonder what the chances of Barca and Man U getting knocked out at this stage are? Yeah, about as high as the stupid Maple Losers winning the Stanley Cup.... *wails more*

Ahem, anyway... in other useless news it would appear that Carbo's not the only one juggling his team's lines around. Craig Hartsburg has finally come to the conclusion that the Sens supposed top offensive line - and pretty much only line that can score- isn't working anymore. Brilliant observation! The Sens - lead by Alfredsson, Heatley and Spezza - had last year topped the league in goals but this year, the players seem to have gone to sleep (and if what I've been hearing is true, Spezza is particularly guilty of going to sleep this season). Look, I'm no expert on hockey and I really don't like to watch the Sens play, but I have noticed when they have played that the only people who seem to be scoring are Alfredsson, Heatley and Spezza and even then they haven't exaclty been scoring lately - and that has to be a problem. You simply can't have just one line that scores goals because when that line doesn't work you're doomed. Even Jason Smith agrees with me:

"One, two or three players can't lead a team on a nightly basis. The League is so competitive that you need everybody playing; you need your whole roster competing at a high level and working and we've been inconsistent with that." [from <here>]

I wonder if he's regretting leaving the Flyers now...?

Apparently this news wasn't greeted too well by the some. The Ottawa Citizen ran an article with the headline 'Hartsburg slots three stars with plumbers' when the news broke. To me, it seems like the Sens problem is that they've relied on these three guys too much for too long and now that it's not working everyone's freaking out. That most people believe that the Sens are indeed Team Alfredsson/Heatley/Spezza and that they are just drop-dead amazing is proved in the same article that ran the aforementioned headline.

"Welcome to the latest Ottawa Senators reality show: Two Plumbers and a Craftsman.

In the first episode, tonight versus the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center, Senators coach Craig Hartsburg is hoping the plumbers -- checkers Jarkko Ruutu and Chris Neil -- can lead the craftsman, Jason Spezza, by example, helping the Senators generate something positive."

I'm not saying that Ruutu and Neil are extremely talented players but is it fair to the rest of the team to be saying it like that? It seriously sounds like everyone thinks that only the "Big Three" are any good. It gets better though. Look:

"The radical line shuffling has the potential to be many things, from a farce to a comedy to a drama, developments worth watching.

It certainly carries the look of desperation, but that is the situation the Senators faced when they arrived here late yesterday afternoon."

Radical line shuffling? Desperation? Good god, there really is a huge emphasis on those three playing together on the same line. Oh well. As someone who had to sit through all of Carbo's musical lines for the past... what, two months now? I find those words really funny. Maybe now the Sens can move away from being a one-line scoring team. Or maybe they won't. I'm pretty sure that Hartsburg tried this move before but he changed his mind for whatever reason. Well, he seems to mean business this time so we'll see.

Later: Guess that idea didn't work too well on the first try. Sens fall to Devils 5-1. Oddly enough they had around the same shots on goal. Not that I was watching the game... I was watching the junior teams playing some pre-competition thing. Team Canada won 4-1 over Sweden. Real stuff starts on the 26th. Keep trying Sens!

So now that I've just spent waaaay too much time yapping about a team I couldn't care less about....

*kicks the Flyers*

Thanks to the Flyers, we've lost Andrei Kostitsyn for tomorrow's game against the Sabres. I missed the injury happening but apparently something is banged up from a knee on knee collision with Hartnell last night. Apparently there is no damage but he's still out. Great. Maxwell is still around so he will be in the lineup tomorrow.

Continuing the useless news:

So we all knew that team Spain and Team Argentina lost their head coaches for the Davis Cup, right? Right. Mancini of course couldn't stay after Argentina lost terribly to Spain and Sanchez couldn't stay because he had a spat with the head of the Spanish tennis association or something like that. Too bad about Sanchez though. I liked him. Anyway, I am now remembering that I failed to mention that both countries have now announced new head coaches! Yahoo... It's not called useless info for nothing! So Spain has gone with Albert Costa. He's won a few titles during his career, including Roland Garros and he was widely rumored to replace Sanchez. And Argentina went with Modesto Vazquez. I've never heard of him either. Apparently he played for Argentina in '68 and '70.

Good luck guys. You're going to need it. Especially Vazquez with the Argentine players all hating each other if the media reports are to be believed.

Chelsea's through and D'Agostini rocks right now

Tuesday, December 9, 2008

First thing's first. The Blues are survived the first round of the Champions League. Yes, you would have thought that would be a given, considering they were the finalists last year and were leading in the Premier League. Well, then things changed and Chelsea went on a losing streak that was no fun at all and suddenly they got knocked out of the top spot in the Premier League and they're future in the Champions League was in danger. So it was almost do or die today for the Blues as they hosted something-that-involves-a-lot-of-letters-and-numbers Cluj. A win would gaurantee a safe passage into the next round while a tie would have been acceptable as long as Bordeaux lost to Roma. Considering how Bordeaux and Roma have been playing the Champions League, I think there was little doubt that Chelsea could have survived on a tie. But who wants to say that they went through into the next round due to the results of the other game in your group? Nobody. Especially not last year's finalists.

I didn't think that Chelsea exactly came out running. In fact I was concerned that Cluj would actually capitilize on all their chances to score. As it was, things turned out differently, starting when Chelsea pulled out the first goal in the 40th minute of the first half. Kalou took advantage of a penalty shot (is that what you call them in football? I'm so hopeless with sports terminology) that came sailing into a large crowd of players and kicked the ball into the back of the net. Absolutely beautiful. The happy feeling didn't last too long into the second half however. Cluj's Panin made a brilliant pass across the field which was headed into the back of the net by.... Kone...I think... I dunno the names of all the players. Anyway, after that goal it looked for a bit like Chelsea was going to die but then they picked things up again and Drogba netted another goal for the Blues. It looked for a while like the goal was actually kicked in by one of the Cluj defenders but a different camera angle seemed to show that Drogba did indeed hit it in. Yay! It was pretty much smooth sailing to the finish line. Chelsea could have gone to the next around anyway as Roma trounced Bordeaux just like we thought they would. Pooh.

My TV and newspaper decided to be exceptionally mean to me today because I didn't even know that Liverpool was playing until the station that was showing the Chelsea vs. Cluj game said that someone from Liverpool had scored. I wasn't too pleased with that. But the Reds (these poor English teams really need to come up with better nicknames for their teams!) ran over PSV after they woke up and decided that you can't lose to a team named PSV. I always think of TVP when I see that team. TVP is "textured vegtable protein" in case you didn't want to know. Anyway, Liverpool was already through and it was just a matter of seeing how many points they could end up with. They finished on top of their group. Yay!

Anywhoo.... The Flames are trying to run over the Habs right now and it's almost working... be back later...

Later: So much for the Habs getting run over by the Flames. Habs 4 Flames 1. I'm liking how the Habs are playing lately. I don't know what's going on but I would have to say that the addition of Matt D'Agostini has to play in there somehow. I don't know if it's how he plays or if it's just the mere fact that he's there and trying that's getting everyone going, but whatever is happening it's working so far. I really hope this whole thing continues into the new year and through to the playoffs.

Anyway....I missed most of the first half of the first period which included Lang's goal (which after seeing the replay, technically went off the skate of one of the defense dudes but whatever. A goal's a goal) but when I tuned in, I got to see the Habs looking like they were getting run over by the Flames. There's a reason why Calgary has been on a roll which included blanking the Rangers the other night, and I was seriously concerned about how the Habs would do. It seems to me that lately everytime they put Halak in nets it's because they feel like they're going to get an easy game and then they play horribly and Halak looks like an idiot. From what I saw the Flames were all over the Habs in the first period. Halak and Kiprusoff were just amazing in the first period. It didn't look like anything was going to get past Kirprusoff. That was until Matt D'Agostini got a breakaway early in the second period. He put the puck around the goalie who had come out and was lying flat on the ice, and scored. Dude, I hope this guy keeps this up because he's now got four goals in the last four games. Fantastic.

Sadly, much like the Chelsea vs Cluj game however, the happy feelings didn't last too long. Two minutes later the Habs attempt to score but the Flames pick up the puck and race down the ice. Iginla makes a nice pass to... Boyd who puts the puck over Halak's shoulder. I wasn't too pleased with that one considering how none of the Habbies seem to notice that Iginla was waiting practically behind them to be given the puck. Boo. I had then had to suffer through a pile of almost shots until Lang came to the rescue. Thanks to a pass from.. Kovalev, I think...doesn't matter too much, anyway, thanks to the pass that came as Lang was conviently standing in front of the net, he puts it over Kirprusoff and it was then 3-1. The scoring finished with a goal by Markov from the blueline in the middle of the third period. And that was practically that, despite the fact that the Flames made a really good effort to score more towards the end of the third period. Actually for most of the third period it was mostly the Habs looking good. Which was nice. The end of the game got messy when it looked like Markov tripped a Flames dude. A fight immediately ensued between a pile of people for no real reason because it wasn't like Phaneuf was hurt or anything - and people were sent off the ice. Calgary also got a penalty for "abuse of officials" which seems to me like it involved Keenan who complaining an awful lot. It didn't matter because the Flames couldn't score and Halak didn't look like an idiot at all. Yay!

The good: Habs beat the Flames who have been on.. well, fire, lately. They did a good job of keeping them from getting too many really good chances at scoring. And of course D'Agostini has been great lately. And Komisarek is still standing behind the bench as the Habs official cheerleader. You go dude!

The interesting: Minus D'Agostini's goal, the Habs goal's involved Lang, Kovalev, Markov and Tanguay. Kovalev looked good out there tonight and I think it' shouldn't be too long before he gets another goal. With Tampa Bay sitting in the bottom of the League, this should be a good opportunity for the Habs to get a pile of goals. In theory.

The bad: Higgins and Dandenault went off the ice with injuries. This is the second time in as many games that Dandenault has gone off with injuries. The last one wasn't serious and I'm really hoping that neither of them are serious this time around.

The really bad: Apparently Dandenault has suffered a broken arm. Great. He'll be sidelined for at least a few months now. I suppose Carbo will be considering calling up another defensemen-dude......No news on Higgins yet.

The sad part: Tanguay didn't score against his old team. He had a good chance in the first period but got stoned by Kiprusoff. At least he did well and his old team didn't try too hard to kill him (although Calgary did take a penalty after someone rammed Tanguay into the boards from behind).

About that powerplay.... It was actually good tonight. Well, compared to most nights anyway. They came up with a lot of good chances which were stopped by a really good Kiprusoff. Same goes for the Flames on their powerplay chances: good chances but they ultimately didn't do anything. Oh well. Tonight's really not the night to be whining about the powerplay.

Time to find my good luck squirrel....

Wednesday, November 26, 2008

Chelsea died against Bordeaux. They tied 1-1. They just came out so flat and got themselves so many yellow cards. *wails* Stupid Chelsea pulled a Habs move and went to sleep! So now Chelsea has to win against... Cluj, I think they have to play next, and Bordeaux has to lose to Roma. There is no reason why that shouldnt happen.... right? Right. Poor Cech. He was the whole team for most of the game. And then Bordeaux gets a corner kick and Chelsea fall asleep and the ball goes in. *wails again* Liverpool won 1-0 against Marseille. I didn't see any of it because my stupid TV stations all decided to play the same game! How stupid is that? Anyway, I think Gerrard scored for Liverpool so at least that's that (okay, so I wanted Torres to score but I always want Torres to score).

Habs vs Red Wings tonight. This promises to be a disaster for the poor Habbies. I'm just hoping that they'll at least come out try their best instead of coming out and dying. I think I should go find my good luck squirrel now.... I named one of the squirrels that comes around my house Hab (what? He didn't look like an Andrei or an Alexei. His sister got named Carey *g*). Maybe I should find him and hope that he brings 'em good luck. Okay, so it didn't work in the playoffs (in his defense, he was just a baby at the time) and he's been shirking on his good luck charmish duties in the last few games but we shall see what happens! I just have to go looking around in all the trees now for him....

Later: Now do that again! Habs win 3-1 over Red Wings

I couldn't find the lucky squirrel but it turns out I didn't need him anyway. The Habs decided to surprise me by actually winning in regulation time over the Wings. I'm quite surprised by this whole outcome. Look, I know that there will be those who will say that the Detroit didn't come out with their best game and if they had then the score would probably be 5-0 in the Wings's favor. Fine. I accept that. Kind of. The Red Wings did indeed appear to come out somewhat flat tonight. But that is totally beside the point. The point is that for the first time in a long time the Habs actually looked like a team instead of a bunch of talented guys who all can't work together for some reason. On top of that they looked like a team that was ready to pull together and work really hard to not get blanked by the Wings. They had something to prove after that loss to the Islanders. And they proved their point: You snooze you lose. I mean that. I don't know what was going on with Detroit but if they were looking for a win after that little episode in Vancouver, they should have done better. I was really impressed with how the Habs did tonight. I seriously don't care if the Wings were the worst team in the league. What matters is how the Habs came out tonight and performed.

I was actually happy with how the first period went. 0-0 meant that the Habs hadn't been demolished by the Wings right away. I thought the Habs' defense looked pretty alive and perky (perky? I thought only Roger Federer could be perky!) tonight. Which is good. Especially when you're playing Detroit. Price made a really risky save as.... some Red Wing guy got an almost breakaway. Price skated way out of the net and pushed the puck away. Don't want to imagine what would have happened if that had gone awry.

Obviously the second period was fantastic. Do I care that two of the goals were helped in by the Wings themselves? Hardly. Goals like that - and worse! - happen. We should be happy that one of 'em was on the power-play. And that we actually got three. I was just sitting there amazed that they were actually able to keep the puck in Detroit's end for that long. Very nice.

We can pretty much forget about the third period but I'll pretend that the offense didn't do anything because they were more concerned about making sure that Detroit didn't score. Which they did actually... but at leas they were limited to one goal. It was a really nice goal by Franzen who outmanoeuverd O'Byrne and a couple of other players to get a shot past Price. Totally not O'Byrne's fault. Franzen is definitely one of Detroit's best players even if he gets over shadowed by people like Hossa and Zetterberg. And he showed everyone why tonight.

I was not impressed with the refs tonight. I thought they missed a lot of stuff on both sides. And no, I'm not just talking about Brad Stuart flattening Tanguay (I did say "both sides", yes?). There quite a bit of tripping by the Canadiens among other things and there was quite a bit of passing with the hand on both sides. At least Detroit has nice ice.

So now what? Well, unlike the last time they played really well and then promptly died, I'm just praying to the hockey gods that the Habs will keep this great display up and beat Washington (did I mention that Ovechkin got himself a hat-trick tonight? Seems he's woken up) and Buffalo (who beat the Bruins tonight).

Oh and Penguins beat the Islanders 5-3. While it sounds like the Penguins decimated their opponents they really only woke up in the middle of the third period to beat the Islanders. Someone should remind the Penguins that you are allowed to score earlier in the game.

And there goes another goalie....

Tuesday, November 25, 2008

I'm interested in seeing how the New Jersey Devils and the Vancouver Canucks end up at the end of the season. Both teams have relied heavily on their goalies to get them where are they are now. With Brodeur out until the spring almost and Luongo now out for anywhere between 3 and 6 weeks, both teams will now have to come up with a way to find sucess without their star players. New Jersey's problem is a little more worrisome in that they have had the luxury of having Brodeur for a long time and they haven't really - from what I understand - seen the need to find a good solid backup goalie. After losing Brodeur NJ went 1 for 6 before winning their last four in a row. I've yet to determine whether it is because they've finally got a rhythm down or if it's because they were playing the Islanders, Florida and Tampa Bay. They did have a shootout win against Washington so I suppose they has to count for something. It's too early to see how Vancouver will handle the loss of Luongo, but a win over Detroit is a good start. Maybe there is hope for us poor Habs tomorrow? Eh, maybe not.... Anyway, we definitely should not rely one hundred percent on Price because you never know when he's going to be out.... And also, it would be nice to give Halak some ice time too.

Totally forgot to mention that Josh Gorges actually scored a goal last night. The poor guy had yet to score a goal and there was all this talk about his stick being cursed (I sincerely hope that no one was taking it that whole curse thing seriously) and all that jazz but yeah, he scored. We should be celebrating that instead of beating up on O'Byrne. Yup!

More Champions League stuff this week. Real Madrid badly needed a win that would put them closer to top ranked Juventus. A loss would have put them below Bate Borisov and possibly out of contention for the Cup, which really isn't that acceptable. Despite some moments of bad passing that basically handed Bate the ball, I thought they did a good job of putting the pressure on in the first half. Drenthe was great in getting the ball into the other side. If he had just gotten the ball to the other players a little more and if they had then actually hit the ball at the net then there probably would have been more scoring. As it was, Real Madrid sort of fell asleep in the second but they hung on to their earlier first half goal by.... Raul Gonzalez (who's shot was set up by - all together now: Drenthe), I think, and won 1-0. It was snowing in Minsk. I've never actually seen a football match played when there's snow. It was funny. Yeah, I'm easily amused. Liverpool and Chelsea tomorrow. Bwahaha...

Oh. Lugano lost to Zug 5-3. How you lose to a team ranked at the bottom is beyond me.... Well, okay, maybe not... but still... ick...

Okay. It's official. This week stinks.

Monday, November 10, 2008

Let's pretend that Monday is part of last week shall we? (Hey, I warned you that I would get semi-incoherent!). So asuming that we're still part of last week, let's review how my sports week went last week.

  • It started with the Champions League (football stuff). After a promising start, Chelsea then promptly died and got demolished by Roma 3-1. Chelsea's goal came way after Roma had scored a pile of times. I somehow missed Chelsea scoring their only goal which was kinda sad for me. At least they're still on top of their group. While I seem to remember that Real Madrid played the same day as Liverpool, ESPN is telling me otherwise, so I guess I completely got things muddled up in the course of everyone doing terribly. But anyway... You would think that if you follow three teams your chances of at least one of them winning is pretty high, yeah? I mean c'mon, it's not like I'm rooting for Tottenham or anything...Well, Real Madrid and Liverpool decided to defy the odds and prompty not win.

Real Madrid played a rather uninspiring game and lost (again) to Juventus which puts them in a not so nice distant second in their group. Liverpool missed out on a pile of chances to score and just as it looked like they were going to lose 1-0 to Atletico Madrid, they were awarded a penalty kick which, in all fairness, should not have been called but I'm not going to get into that. There were plenty of other penalties that the ref should have called and didn't, and he calls one that shouldn't have been called. The result was Liverpool scored and finished the game 1-1. They are in second to Atletico only on what I believe is goal differences. I guess I should be happy with the tie.

Edit: Apparently Chelsea, Liverpool and Real Madrid won in their league things over the weekend. Chelsea beat Blackburn 2-0, Liverpool beat West Brom something rather 3-0 and Real Madrid came up with a 4-3 win which apparently was an exciting game. I'm sure I would be feeling a whole lot better about it if I had actually seen them play *curses TV that only plays American football right now* Gah.....
  • As disappointing as that was I figured, hey, at least I can look forward to hockey. Montreal should be able to win no problem against Colombus and Toronto. Well, we all know how those games went so I'm not going to rant further on them. *rips out hair anyway* I mean c'mon.... it's TORONTO for crying out loud...*wails*
  • To top off the wonderfully lame week, tennis has gone completely the way I didn't want it to go. del Potro and Tsonga lost to Djokovic and Davydenko. I'm not a big Tsonga fan but I was hoping he would do better. And this morning I learned that Federer died against Simon. After taking the first set, apparently Mr. World No. 2 forgot how to play and made a pile of errors which resulted in the French dude who shouldn't be there, winning. So now Mr. Federer has a huge mountain to climb if he wants to get out of the group stage and into the semi-finals. Do I need to mention that if he doesn't make it this would be the first time that he hasn't made it in six years? I'm doing my best not to think of the posibility of Federer not making it past the group stage. I'm really trying but it's hard not to. He's going to have to beat Roddick and Murray and to beat Murray right now he's going to have to play his best tennis. Oh, and of course Murray beat Roddick and that just made the whole thing depressing. That was a given though....at least Roddick won a set though...quite nicely too. Maybe Murray will play like that against Federer *hopes* I can always hope, right? Right. As improbable as it might be, it's entirely possible. Yeah... *keeps telling herself that*

Before anyone starts bashing me for saying that about Murray, let me just say, I have a lot of respect for him a player. I think he's great right now and he's only going to get better. That being said, I still want Federer to win because it would be totally awsome for him to win five of those things, and plus, he needs to win something this year.
