Random recap of sorts of the last two games

... because I can. And I feel like being random. Whoo!

Game One

• boring first period for the most part. I thought the crowd at the Joe had died...
  
• Wings score off of Flambe's butt. Hmm... thought he was trying to avoid that?
• Pens reply when Osgood mishandles a rebound
• Wings score off of Flambe's foot. Oh dear...
  
• Ozzy some amazing saves. Is this really Ozzy?
  
• Wings get another goal. No hattrick for Flambe. Abdelkader the Denis Killer scores the goal.
  
• With an empty net, the Wings can't put the puck in for the fourth goal. Apparently they need Flambe's help that badly.
  
• Puffy tries to play physically. Gets called a "headhunter" and whacks some Wings around.
  

Game Two

• boring first period. Pens run around the Wings a bit. Nothing too serious.
  
• Oh! Bingo! the Puffles score first on the... PP! After a mad scramble inside Ozzy's net.
  
• Is this the night karma disses the Wings?
• No. Wings reply in the second with no help from Flambe this time
• Wings get another goal.
  
• And another one. This one courtesy of Flambe not paying attention really.
• Wings still haven't mastered the art of scoring on an empty net.
  
• I nominate Zetterberg for the Vezina trophy. He curled himself into a ball behind Ozzy and stopped Puffy from scoring. Forget Schenn. Zetterberg for the Vezina!
  
• Puffy actually works but nobody else felt like working
• It was "let's see how many players we can fit into the net" night
• Eggplant attempted to fight. Semin is still the master of botched up fights but we'll let Eggplant be number two.
• And I think the NHL forgot what "automatic" means. As in "automatic suspension if you instigate a fight at the end of the game" because Eggplant isn't getting some downtime in the press box.
  

So what do you know... maybe these finals are semi interesting afterall....

Wrong Patrick got the game winner in OT, but the Peachhawks win and make me squeal with delight - which is something. I haven't done that since.... game 6 of the Caps/Puffles series. FEEL THE POWER OF THE PEACHINESS!

- blowing a 3-0 lead is BAD. The Peachhawks had 2 goals in the first period and another one early in the second, only to blew it completely. Third saw no more scoring despite the Wings dominating the play.

- Hitting and concussing someone (Havlat) is BAD. I don't care if the hit was "clean". Concussions are no laughing matter and they do not need to be a part of hockey. It makes me sick to my stomach to see someone just lying on the ice with their eyes basically staring blanking at the ceiling.
- Kronwall was finally tossed for an ugly hit.

- Crabby Khabby is not okay. He was pulled for... Huet.... (HUET?!) and wasn't seen after. Not even on the bench. Not good. He was doing really well up until the point where the whole team collapsed.
- I'm not sure I like seeing our ex-goalies.... Jose was horrendous in his first game of this playoffs and Huet scared me to death...

- Peach Fuzz looked better than the last game.

- Peachbrook got a peachgoal for the Peachhawks is a lot of fun to say....

But first I have one thing to say......

Oh my god. Roger Federer just beat Rafael Nadal. On clay. In Madrid. What. The. Hell.

For those of you who don't know.... the More-Adorable-Version-of-Crosby never beats the Ovie of tennis on clay courts. Never. Except for that one time in Hamburg a couple of years ago. The Ovie of tennis has an amazingly wickedly sick record on clay (try three loses in four years). He doesn't lose on clay. And he doesn't lose at home in Spain. Hell, the MAVC has not beaten the Ovie since.... well, it's been a while, let's put it that way. So yes. WAY TO GO ROGER! Yes, Djokovic probably did half the work for you by pooping out Nadal, but yeah. You won and deserved it. Congrats Roger =) For today, you are the hero for downing the Clay Monster. Way to go.

Now back to hockey...

So the Hawks lost in what looked too much like the very first time I saw Detroit play. You know, the first game of the Stanley Cup finals last year... where they blanked the Puffles? While the Wings didn't blank the Hawks, it was one of those games where you go "do they really have to play that well?" It was a statement game by the Wings. They're reminding the Hawks just who's boss. If it wasn't for Crabby Khabby then it would have probably been 10-2 for the Wings. Not kidding here. The Wings completely dominated the game and looked freakishly scary doing it. You just had to sit there and go ".....oh dear.....if they played like this maybe they could repeat?"

In the strange mind of EP that means that she's going for the Hawks now.

So Peach Fuzz Kane didn't do anything that I noticed. In fact I spent most of the game looking around for him.

But I think I like this team. I think. I think me saying "Peach Fuzz" all day today was what made me like them. I mean, how can you not like a guy who's called "Peach Fuzz"? Granted nobody but me knows who Peach Fuzz is but who cares? People are only now starting to get who Puffy and Eggplant are. And I'm not even sure about Eggplant. But still... It was so refreshingly nice to see someone's face other than Puffy's that I just had to go and be a fan. Especially when said face has peach fuzz instead of a crap excuse for a "beard". Yes, peach fuzz wins over the ugly "wannabeard" that Puffy has. Anybody but the Puffy! Please. For the love of hockey. Anybody but the Puffy.

Okay. I'm clearly beyond tired now because sane and awake people don't pick teams based on their playoff beards, right? right. Or that's just my very immature side coming out again. But yeah. Peach Fuzz Kane for the Cup, baby!

One day I will learn not to write up these things when I'm half asleep....

Who wants to bet that if the Wings fail to win the Stanley Cup, Hossa will split and join the next contender that comes up? (You think he's cursing himself for completely failing to predict that Boston would be drop dead amazing this year?)

Pens got blanked by the Wings in a mostly boring game. Maybe I was missing something but I though the entire first period was a really boring. No scoring, and everyone looked like they had just woken up and were still groggy. I went off to vacuum the carpet while the second period opened up. Things weren't looking bad for the Pens - in fact despite the fact that their powerplay was more ineffectual than the Habs' they had had some good quality chances at scoring a goal - until Datsyuk messed things up with a beautiful powerplay goal *sighs* Still it was only 1-0 going into the third but it was looking more and more like the Wings were going to take this one - I'm tired of this scene where my team is down by one goal going into the third and then they blow it completely.....this is so sad. Despite the fact that Hossa and Datsyuk scored two more goals, I thought Fleury played well. It wasn't like any of those goals were bad or cheap or anything...Hossa's goal should never have happened but we can all blame Staal for not knocking Hossa off the puck at the blueline for that goal. Bah....C'mon Pens.... you can do better than that..... that's just sad that Hossa gets to gloat about blanking you in your own building........

The sun did come up this morning...

....just thought I'd mention that in case anyone thought that the world had ended last night......

New day, not looking forward to tomorrow night when the Habs go off to Calgary and not really looking forward to the Pens vs Wings today but I figured I'd watch it anyway.

Let's see.... Wings are 5-4-1 in their last 10 while the Pens are.... 5-4-1 as well.... Wings are the winners of three games in a row now after coming off a five game losing streak (hey, at least the Habs haven't done that yet!) and the Pens are the winners of 2 in a row following some up and down play.

Wings are 3-2-1 when they get outshot and 31-9-4 when they do the outshooting. Pens are 13-15-3 when they get outshot and 12-6-1 when they outshoot you.

In terms of "goals for" the Wings are 1st and the Pens are 6th. The big difference is in goals against which has the Wings at 16th and the Pens at 27th.

It'll be up to the goalies to show what they've got and right now at least we can say that none of them are too hot these days. Ty Conklin has a .856 SP in his last 4 starts, Osgood is .860 in his last 5 and Fleury has a .864 SP in his last 5. Or at least according to my scrappy math, that's what Fleury should have.....

Wings have the best powerplay in the league which is oddly contrasted with one of the worst PKs in the entire league. Pens are ranked 23rd on the powerplay and 20th on the PK.

Last time these guys played the Pens won 7-6 in OT after the Wings had a major meltdown in the third period. We'll see if the teams can keep the scoring down at least somewhat today....

Habs zap Bolts in SO

Pre-game rant:

Now. I know what happened last time I compared the teams on paper so I'm not going to do it this time. Let's just say this:

• despite stinking big time, the Lightning are looking for their FOURTH win in a row. That's still two more than the Habs can say for themselves (thanks stupid game against Carolina) and considering the losers are in 28th place....they shouldn't be stringing that many wins in a row. You can thank a pathetic display of hockey from Pittsburgh and Florida for those.
• The Lightning completely embarrassed the Habs in Habsville last time these two met. I personally would like to see revenge taken. And I'm hoping the rest of the team wants that too.
  
• If the Habs win, it would go some ways to trying to consolidate their place (4th) in the conference. Let's not forget that the Bruins still have over ten points on us.
  
• While the Habs just played last night, the good news is Tampa Bay is a lot closer to Sunrise than say... Newark is. Less travel time is good. I'm still hoping that they'll be motivated to win tonight.

Habs sweep Florida. Kinda.

Well... that wasn't quite what I had in mind but I guess a win is a win. Then again, the fact that the Habs had to go to shootouts against a team ranked 28th in the league is not very nice. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

It was clear that the nice warm Florida weather had done something to the Habs brains from the moment that they stepped on to the nice. They were severely outworked by the Bolts for most of the game. The first period was an absolute mess with both teams taking four penalties. Oh and the plexiglass or whatever it's made of wall things around the arena are clearly not made to stand up to people being slammed into them - I believe it was Tanguay who got rammed into the boards and then promptly didn't show up for the rest of the game - and one fell out 'causing a loooong delay which had me screaming. Actually, what really got me screaming was how awful the Bolts goalie was in the first period. He must have provided the Habs with at least a gazillion chances to score which included losing the puck on a clearly attempt and leaving a WIDE OPEN NET for the Habs to promptly not score in. He gave up a lot of rebounds which no one picked up on either. Of course who lets in the first goal? Why not the terrible goalie but Price! And how does Price let in said goal? You tell me. Malone - aka the guy that Pittsburgh should have kept - takes a shot or whatever... or a pass... which ends up on the stick of Prospal who is standing ALONE in front of Price and a half open net. Score.

Well, no matter. the Habs wonderful offense will get another goal or five and flatten them, right? Wrong. The offensive was sleepy and the Bolts defense was actually good. This resulted in the Habs seemingly being unable to keep the puck in the other zone. I had to sit through forty minutes and forty six agonizing minutes before the Habs finally punished Smith for not so good plays and put the puck over him and into the net. Oh and yes, that was Latendresse who got the goal whith the assists going to Lapierre and Kostopoulos. That was it from the scoring department however. I will say this though, the third period was a lot better for the Habs. A lot better. They had every opportunity to win the dumb game in regulation and OT. They only took one penalty and seemed more focused. Could have had something to do with that goal... See what no penalties and scoring goals does for your moral? You should do that more often!!!!!!!!

Anyway, over time solved nothing and it was shoot out time. Now, given how Smith had been for most of the night - okay, okay, so in the third period he came up with some big saves. Yeah, yeah. - and given the Bolts track record in shootouts (2-6 before tonight), I wasn't completely worried but shootouts give me a heart attack anyway. Memo to self: write up a rant on why shootouts should be gone forever. Jokinen went first and put it past Price in what I have to admit was nice enough goal. Thankfully Kovalev put the cheers from the poor Floridians to rest with a nice goal past Smith. Why couldn't you have done that earlier in the game?! And from there on it was all over for the Bolts. Price stopped Prospal who kind of shot the puck right at him while Lapierre sank Smith and effectively ended the game. Well, okay, so Lacavalier could have been the hero and extended the Bolts chance at winning but Price stopped him too so it was byebye Bolts.

And Carbo and I could finally breath a sigh of relief and be happy that the Habs escaped with this win. Now. Get some rest. And come back and put up a much better effort against the Devils. You're going to need it.

The good:

• Um... the shootouts? And I guess the effort was better in the third period.
  
• I like the effort put worth by the Lapierre/Latendresse/Kostopoulos line. I've heard people talk about how Lapierre makes up for his lack of skill by the incredibly effort he just puts in almost every game. Now, can you imagine what type of team the Habs would be if the "more talented" guys put in the same type of effort?
• I liked how Markov single handedly stopped a three on one attempt at a goal by the Bolts. Why it was three on one, I'm not sure... but yeah. Yay for Markov.

The bad:

• I'm too tired to list them all. The whole effort from the Habs for most of the game could have been better.
  
• the power play is non existent again. Carbo, please do something about this. I lost count on how many times the Bolts nearly got a shorthanded goal.
  
• the penalties hurt the Habbies too.
  
• Brisebois. 'nuff said.
  
• Tanguay leaving the nice with a possible injury. NO MORE INJURED PLAYERS PLEASE!
  

The interesting:

• Someone thought that it would be a good idea to hit Smith. I seriously can't remember who it was. Latendresse maybe? I don't think so. Well, he promptly got beaten to an almost pulp for that. Though I suspect that if the roles had been reversed and someone had done that to Price then they would be in the hospital right now. C'mon... If Plekanec can go insane over the mere fact that someone tried too hard to get the puck off of Price can you imagine what he would do if someone hit him? Yeah. Lights out.
  
• I didn't notice this last time but tonight the Bolts seemed to play a very physical game almost Flyers-like. Well okay... not quite.. but yeah....
  

The very strange:

• Did anyone see Prospal's reaction when he got that goal past Price? He looked like a guy who had been playing for twenty years and had just scored his first NHL goal. For the records, that was his seventh this season. He must have been so devastated when his shootout attempt failed miserably.
• Speaking of reactions.... Price pulls a Roger-Federer-at-the-US-Open and displays some emotion after winning! Isn't that awesome?
  

IN OTHER NEWS THAT YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT!

• Wings blank Blackhawks. Not good news for that whole outdoor thing but maybe the Blackhawks will put up a better effort, yes? I would hope so.
  
• Leafs actually win one against... the Thrashers. Wow. I'm so impressed. Yeah, I get (more) sarcastic at 12:00 at night.
• Poor Dustin Tokarski - you know, the guy who's one of Team Canada's goalies - just got signed to a 3 year entry level thing by the... Bolts.... well, they could use a good goalie I guess. I haven't seen Tokarski fall on the ice while he was just standing there doing nothing.
• Bruins skate over Pens. Not very cool but not exactly unexpected. Can someone though, please tell me where Crosby and Malkin have gone lately? The only Pens to score were Sykora and Dupuis (who's goal I saw. It was really nice). I've said this before but for the sake of being uncreative I'll say it again: I'm no fan of Crosby but he needs to step it up if the Pens have hope in hell of not finishing fourth in their division.
  
• Team USA routs Team Kazakhstan 12-0. Canada did better.
• The Hammies aka the Mini Habbies blanked the Baby Leafs the other day. Nyah!

Chelsea died against Bordeaux. They tied 1-1. They just came out so flat and got themselves so many yellow cards. *wails* Stupid Chelsea pulled a Habs move and went to sleep! So now Chelsea has to win against... Cluj, I think they have to play next, and Bordeaux has to lose to Roma. There is no reason why that shouldnt happen.... right? Right. Poor Cech. He was the whole team for most of the game. And then Bordeaux gets a corner kick and Chelsea fall asleep and the ball goes in. *wails again* Liverpool won 1-0 against Marseille. I didn't see any of it because my stupid TV stations all decided to play the same game! How stupid is that? Anyway, I think Gerrard scored for Liverpool so at least that's that (okay, so I wanted Torres to score but I always want Torres to score).

Habs vs Red Wings tonight. This promises to be a disaster for the poor Habbies. I'm just hoping that they'll at least come out try their best instead of coming out and dying. I think I should go find my good luck squirrel now.... I named one of the squirrels that comes around my house Hab (what? He didn't look like an Andrei or an Alexei. His sister got named Carey *g*). Maybe I should find him and hope that he brings 'em good luck. Okay, so it didn't work in the playoffs (in his defense, he was just a baby at the time) and he's been shirking on his good luck charmish duties in the last few games but we shall see what happens! I just have to go looking around in all the trees now for him....

Later: Now do that again! Habs win 3-1 over Red Wings

I couldn't find the lucky squirrel but it turns out I didn't need him anyway. The Habs decided to surprise me by actually winning in regulation time over the Wings. I'm quite surprised by this whole outcome. Look, I know that there will be those who will say that the Detroit didn't come out with their best game and if they had then the score would probably be 5-0 in the Wings's favor. Fine. I accept that. Kind of. The Red Wings did indeed appear to come out somewhat flat tonight. But that is totally beside the point. The point is that for the first time in a long time the Habs actually looked like a team instead of a bunch of talented guys who all can't work together for some reason. On top of that they looked like a team that was ready to pull together and work really hard to not get blanked by the Wings. They had something to prove after that loss to the Islanders. And they proved their point: You snooze you lose. I mean that. I don't know what was going on with Detroit but if they were looking for a win after that little episode in Vancouver, they should have done better. I was really impressed with how the Habs did tonight. I seriously don't care if the Wings were the worst team in the league. What matters is how the Habs came out tonight and performed.

I was actually happy with how the first period went. 0-0 meant that the Habs hadn't been demolished by the Wings right away. I thought the Habs' defense looked pretty alive and perky (perky? I thought only Roger Federer could be perky!) tonight. Which is good. Especially when you're playing Detroit. Price made a really risky save as.... some Red Wing guy got an almost breakaway. Price skated way out of the net and pushed the puck away. Don't want to imagine what would have happened if that had gone awry.

Obviously the second period was fantastic. Do I care that two of the goals were helped in by the Wings themselves? Hardly. Goals like that - and worse! - happen. We should be happy that one of 'em was on the power-play. And that we actually got three. I was just sitting there amazed that they were actually able to keep the puck in Detroit's end for that long. Very nice.

We can pretty much forget about the third period but I'll pretend that the offense didn't do anything because they were more concerned about making sure that Detroit didn't score. Which they did actually... but at leas they were limited to one goal. It was a really nice goal by Franzen who outmanoeuverd O'Byrne and a couple of other players to get a shot past Price. Totally not O'Byrne's fault. Franzen is definitely one of Detroit's best players even if he gets over shadowed by people like Hossa and Zetterberg. And he showed everyone why tonight.

I was not impressed with the refs tonight. I thought they missed a lot of stuff on both sides. And no, I'm not just talking about Brad Stuart flattening Tanguay (I did say "both sides", yes?). There quite a bit of tripping by the Canadiens among other things and there was quite a bit of passing with the hand on both sides. At least Detroit has nice ice.

So now what? Well, unlike the last time they played really well and then promptly died, I'm just praying to the hockey gods that the Habs will keep this great display up and beat Washington (did I mention that Ovechkin got himself a hat-trick tonight? Seems he's woken up) and Buffalo (who beat the Bruins tonight).

Oh and Penguins beat the Islanders 5-3. While it sounds like the Penguins decimated their opponents they really only woke up in the middle of the third period to beat the Islanders. Someone should remind the Penguins that you are allowed to score earlier in the game.

Victory at last!

FINALLY! WE WON! WE WON! WE WON! So sad that I have to get excited over one game....But yay! We won! I ended up missing part of the first period. Apparently I got the time wrong. By the time I turned it on there was 8 something left in the first and Higgins had already scored. Sad, I know. Here's how the rest of it went:

(times may be off because the lovely clock on the TV goes backwards. While this is great if you want to know how much time is left, it's not great when you want to know when something happens. Me trying to do math on the fly = beyond bad).

13: something - Oh they're playing? How come I didnt know? *kicks TV*
16: something - Gorges gets a penalty for... something.... Shouldn't the Senators dude get one for hooking? Oh well. Senators get power play. Lots of agony. Price makes nice saves. Spezza forgets how to score.
19: something - Prices makes a nice save, Ruutu or Spezza... I think it was Spezza, falls on Price. People go flying. Don't people know that you're supposed to put the puck into the net and not the opposing players?
20: something - First period over. I go to ponder why the time got messed up and I missed the goal by Higgins....

2nd period

1-3 - something - Ottawa tries to score. Fails. We also try our hand at knocking the opposing net around. Hey, maybe we should make that part of the game: whoever can knock over the net the most wins!
4-6 something - waiting for something to happen....anytime now....
7 something - do we want Ottawa to score??!!!! the other end people! you can't score unless the puck is at the other end!
8 something - penalty to Ottawa. Lots of cheering. Okay, time to score people!
9 something - .....hello.....? anyone there? ......x-x
10 something - guess not....
12 something - penalty for us
13 something - are we trying to score???! HAHAHAHA...Ottawa can't score....we almost score again! Hahahahaha......
14: 11 WE SCORE!!!!! Well, not we. Higgins! I love you Higgins! And I love you Sergei and Ryan o'Bryn for assisting! 2-0 for us!
15 something - we're singing. it's like a freaking football match... hahah...we're getting noisy for the first time all night.
15:39 - WE SCORED AGAIN! OH! OH! WE SCORED AGAIN! On the face off practically! HAHAHAHAH! Latandress, you rock tonight too! And yay for Lang for assisting. Bwahahahaha.......Silly Senators.....!

18 something - When I said score, I didn't mean the Senators score....stop the puck, stop the puck! Price saves.. Let's all try to beat each other up now that the play has stopped....*dies* 4 on 4

3rd period

1 something - Ottawa almost scores.... HELLO MONTREAL?! WAKE UP!
2 -3 something - oops what was that? some poor Hab got whacked. Fight.... Not a good time.... 4 on 4? What are you saying Koivu? Can't lipread, you know! It's 4 on 3?! We have the advantage? Yes? No? Someone tell me! Yes. We have the advantage. Now we should score, yeah?
5 something - guess not. no more penalty.... waah....
6 something - hello? Price, can you grab the puck? I know you can't see what's going on, but please try to grab the puck. Please. Thank you! Now the rest of you stop fighting!
8 something - was that a freaking breakaway for Ottawa? No scoring, no scoring... I can't watch! Oh! Price blocks it! You idiots are so lucky to have Price!!!!!!!!!! We love you so far Priiiiice!

My mom's cousin is complaining that no one threw their hats when Higgins got his third goal. Apparently you have to throw your hat when a guy scores a ha trick. Hence the reason why they call it a hat trick. Too bad no one decided to wear hats to the Bell Center.....*pokes people* WEAR A HAT DARNIT! Halak could have thrown his hat.... he looks terrible in it. Kinda like Andy Roddick in those hats he wears while playing INDOORS. Sorry Roddick! You're still awsome at interviews... =p EDIT: Apparently hats were thrown. Obviously all I could see was Higgins' face so I couldn't tell if anyone threw 'em or not. I still think that Halak should have thrown his!

I was going to say that it's too bad the Penguins didn't win tonight but... guess what? THEY WON! 7-6 in OT! OH! EAT THAT WINGS! I almost wish I could have seen that (who decided to schedule as the same day as Montreal vs Ottawa?! *wails*). I'll definitely have to see the highlights tomorrow. Jordan Staal you are the Penguins hero for those two goals at the end.... Mwahahaha....

My night will be perfect if the Flames beat Toronto but I won't know till tomorrow what the results are for that so myeh. I'll take Montreal shutting out Ottawa and Pittsburgh winning over Detroit at the last second. Bwahahahaha.....

Oh and about tennis...Novak won against Davydenko. In three sets. The set that Djokovic lost was pretty sad (0-6 ?!!!!) but he won the match. Apparently Davydenko died in the last set. If Federer goes out I think I may just cheer for Djokovic... or del Potro if he goes through. del Potro still has a chance after beating Tsonga. Sorry Tsonga...I'm really hoping that Roger wins tomorrow morning....you can beat Roddick no problem... in theory....i'm going to stop talking in theory....it's getting sad now....*sniffles*
